Vintage Mushroom Lamp Bill Curry Stemlite Design Line Mid Century Modern Light
Item: For your consideration we are presenting for sale a vintage mushroom designed by Bill Curry for Stemlite / Design Line Inc. The metal tulip base is a beige color. There is an on/off rotary knob switch located on the metal base just below where the shade rests. The underside of the base has its original UL label, and there is also a number sequence stamped into the metal, along with what appears to be a symbol (see photos). A great vintage addition to any mcm interior setting! The lamp stands approx. 11.25″ tall x 12.5″ in diameter. Condition: Overall, given its age, we’d say the lamp is in very good condition. The base shows some minor paint loss that can be left alone or easily touched up (see photos). The glass shade is free from chips, cracks, breaks, repairs, etc. The electrical wiring is in good shape – no frays, splits, exposed and / or brittle wires. Vintage Stemlite Mushroom Lamp Mid Century Modern by Bill Curry Design Line Inc
Stemlite, the debut product of Bill Curry’s Design Line, was introduced in the 1960s as the first lamp eliminating the base-plus-shade concept. All the bases and glass globes in the Stemlite series were interchangeable, allowing for endless combinations. The style quickly gained popularity and was later emulated by others. The Stemlite collection draws inspiration from nature: the streamlined die-cast metal base resembles a tough yet delicate stem of a tulip, carrying the beautiful glass shade like a fragile bud waiting to unfold. The simplistic yet impressive design language of the Stemlite lamps can be easily combined with all styles of decor from classic to eclectic to experimentative, making them an exceptional fit for public spaces as well as private. Bill Curry studied in Los Angeles Art Center, and after graduating worked as an ad-man and Art Director before creating his own company for design furniture and lighting, Design Line, in 1962. Bill Curry is best known for his iconic collection of Stemlite lamps from the 1960s, universally celebrated for their innovativeness and unique attractiveness. Lamp is in working condition. Scratches and scuffs to the white enamel on the base. Cord shows some signs of wear. Some speckles on glass. Other age appropriate wear present. Stemlite by Design Line. White Tulip Table Lamp (Base Only). The base retains the original label. We recommend that the lamp be rewired as it maintains the original wiring which is now quite old. It does turn on but the 3 way function does not seem to work. Good vintage condition with typical finish wear in areas. Approximately 6-1/2 from base to light bulb socket.
