Exceptional Mid Century Carved Balinese Teak Lamp Hindu Ramayana Figures 32 H
This extraordinary Mid 20. Century solid teak table lamp has hand carved, exquisitely detailed figures from the Hindu epic Ramayana. The carving surrounds the entire tall teak column, with remarkably intricate figural work and deeply modeled scrolling botanical motifs. The lamp as much a piece of sculpture as a functional work of Mid Century lighting. Measures 32 ½ high to the top of the brass finial. The teak part is 20 ½. Weighs 7 ½ pounds. In excellent vintage condition. The brass harp and brass finial are included. This was likely crafted in Bali, Indonesia during the 1960s or 1970s. The lamp reflects was a mid century expression of traditional Balinese wood carving traditions. The warm aged teak is richly carved on every surface, with a particularly intricate depiction on the front of apsara-style figures wearing elaborate crowns, jewelry, and ceremonial dress. The level of workmanship is exceptional. Fine pierced carving details, expressive faces, graceful hand gestures, and flowing ornamental motifs demonstrate the skill of a master artisan rather than mass-produced tourist décor. This beautiful piece has developed a rich natural patina that highlights the carving. Even unlit, this lamp functions as an exotic room accent and focal point.
