Dating to the 1930′s, this unusual ringed glass lamp is a remarkable example of Machine Age modernist design. Currently referred to retro-futurist design, Buck Rogers would certainly have been proud to display this in his home. Unfortunately, there are no makers marks and I have been unable to uncover any information regarding specific provenance. This lamps has been restored and refurbished and is ready for contemporary use. Chrome metal surfaces have been cleaned and polished. The black base disc has been refinished in satin enamel. The original bulb socket has been retained and bulb contacts cleaned and polished. Wiring has been replaced with new reproduction rayon covered power cord and appointed with new vintage style plug. The frosted glass shade is in excellent condition. The black edges of the rings have been restored. The inside of the shade retains most of its original translucent painted finish and has not been further restored. Please refer to the final twp photos for shade condition detail. This lamp utilizes one standard medium (E26) Edison base light bulb. A frosted T10 type tube-shaped bulb was used in lighting for the photographs provided here. Light bulb is not included. Approximate dimensions are as follows: Height with shade: 10-3/4″ Glass shade: 6-3/4″ H X 2-1/2″ Center Diameter X 3-1/4″ Ring Diameter Base: 4-1/4″ diameter X 4-1/4″ H General and critical photos have been provided and are a part of the description for this offering. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Lamps, Lighting\Lamps”. The seller is “collectingbydesign” and is located in this country: US. This item can be shipped to United States.

Offered here is a rare lamp of extreme machine age design. Manufactured in the 1930′s, this Mercolite lamp was originally a mercury vapor heat lamp. It has been professionally converted to accept a standard medium Edison base light bulb, and operates as a lamp only. The copper reflective shade provides a warm light, highlighting the streamlined base. The shade portion pivots up and down by way of a wingnut joint. This lamp is in excellent working order. Most all external parts have been professionally plated in contrasting chrome and copper. The two aluminum end caps for the copper shade have been polished. The original porcelain heat bulb socket has been refurbished with a new porcelain medium Edison base socket. The original rotary switch has been refurbished with new like kind. The power cord has been replaced with reproduction rayon covered twisted type cord and appointed with a new vintage style plug. All internal wiring is new. A new felt has been applied to the underside of the base. This lamp accepts a standard medium Edison base light bulb. A long tube type light bulb would be ideal (refer to photo #5). An LED type bulb is recommended to minimize heat transfer to the metal shade. Light bulb is not included. Dimensions are as follows: Height to top of neck: 11″ Height with shade fully upright: 15″ Shade width: 8.75″ Base length: 7″ Base Width: 5.5 NOTED FLAWS – Upon close inspection, the following flaws can be observed: -One of the aluminum end caps for the copper shade shows some distortion -There is a superficial scratch on the back of the copper shade General and critical photos have been provided and are a part of the description for this offering. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Lamps, Lighting\Lamps”. The seller is “collectingbydesign” and is located in this country: US. This item can be shipped to United States.

The Markel Corporation, Buffalo NY, circa 1935 brings us the finest Machine Age/Streamline lamps known to man. Their designers were not well documented but they surely brought to market something extraordinary. These lamps are made of steel, not brass like most others, and are built to last 1,000 years. A profoundly satisfying and alluring machine for living. Markel lamp base with added speed rings, misc. Lamp parts and concentric circle high-grade steel shade (my copyrighted design). Other items can e seen in the UME store. Your perusal here is directed at the real goods. Markel’s were not hallmarked with a stamp into the metal, though identified with a paper foil label (not included). Other items can be seen in the UME store. Objects d’ Art as your friends for life? Hould not look like it was made yesterday. All lighting in the UME store inventory is guaranteed to be greater than 70 years old, most 80 – 100 yro. It is our professional opinion that vintage should not look like it was made yesterday, so there is no “flash” no “glimmer” no “shimmer” here. Expect the principal substance of UME offerings to have the aesthetics of a true and historic composition. Why Collect Art Deco. Art Deco and the designers of that period were influenced by previous design movements which started around 1890; i. The British and American Arts and Crafts (1890- 1915), European and American Art Nouveau (1880 – 1910), Wiener Werkstatte (Vienna Workshop, 1900 -1933) and the Bauhaus (House of Building – Germany, 1919 -1933). These earlier movements focused on curvilinear (curved lines) designs while the Bauhaus was at the forefront in establishing rectilinear (geometric) forms. In 1925 the French put on a symposium/convention to show-off their objects d’ art. At the time they were the leaders of all things related to art and design. It was called the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Moderne. The term, Art Deco, was coined by a few of the designers that participated and after some years the term became part of the designer’s vernacular. NOTE : Germany was not invited. America did not attend as President Coolidge advised the French that we did not have any noteworthy designers. So, when engaged in casual conversation, 1925 can be regarded as the starting point for the Art Deco Period. However, academically speaking and when educating a client, I use. 1910 – 1915 as the beginning. During this timeframe designers (primarily the British) began incorporating the “circle and the square” (let us give due praise to our very own iconic architect/designer, Frank Lloyd Wright for his contribution here). Of the geometric (rectilinear) theme and thus we have the inception of what would come to be known as Art Deco. Now comes your Art Deco Bachelor’s Degree… The info I’m presenting to you next is the most important tidbit in this essay. This fact will pay substantial dividends, whether you just want to collect a few pieces that you are attracted to or go beyond that and become a dealer. IN ORDER TO BE AN “OFFICIAL” ANTIQUE AN ITEM MUST BE 100 YEARS OLD. It may come as surprise. To you that only a very few of the collectors and novice dealers in the Art Deco community are aware of this. Over the next several years you will. A “boom” in the pursuit and value of Art Deco. It all boils down to good timing, we just did the math (1910 – 1915), and it’s a simple equation. The count-down has started, 100 years is now! This item is in the category “Collectibles\Lamps, Lighting\Lamps”. The seller is “royalwaldorf” and is located in this country: US. This item can be shipped to United States, Canada.
